Geneva Centre for Autism Summer TrainingBack to School Autism Training Institute in Four Canadian Cities
The Geneva Centre for Autism's Summer Training Institute will take place from August 24-27, 2009 in Toronto, Ottawa, London, and Barrie.
The Geneva Centre for Autism began providing services to individuals with autism in 1974. The foundation started out as a summer camp opportunity for individuals with autism and has grown to a full-service autism organization. One of the foundation’s offerings is the Geneva Center for Autism Summer Training Institute. The four-day event focuses on understanding and educating students on the autism spectrum. Training Institute LocationsThe program will be held at four different locations in Ontario. Attendees can choose to participate in the conference at The Westin Harbour Castle in Toronto, the Ottawa Marriott Hotel in Ottawa, the Best Western Lamplighter Inn & Conference Centre in London, and the Horseshoe Resort in Barrie. The conference begins on August 24 and ends on August 27. Each conference day begins at 9:00 am with a welcome message. Lunch will be provided to attendees from noon until 1:00 pm each day and then the final session of the day concludes at 3:30 pm. SpeakersNoted autism experts, Brenda Smith Myles, Diane Adreon, and Sherry A. Moyer will be the featured speakers at the conference. In 2004, Myles received the Outstanding Professional Award from the Autism Society of America (ASA). She has written several books and articles on both autism and Asperger’s Syndrome. Adreon has coauthored Asperger’s Syndrome books with Myles and serves as the Associate Directory of the University of Miami-Nova Southeastern University Center for Autism & Related Disabilities (CARD). Moyer is the mother of a young adult with Asperger’s Syndrome, is a consultant for NHS Human Services, and is the author of The ECLIPSE Model. Autism Conference SessionsThe theme of the Geneva Center for Autism Summer Institute 2009 is “Understand Me, Motivate Me, Teach Me – Reaching All Students with an Autism Spectrum Disorder.” The first day of the conference will provide attendees with the tools they need to learn more about their student on the autism spectrum. Additionally, the use of Applied Behavior Analysis in the classroom will be discussed. Days two and three of the summer training institute will include a discussion that focuses on classroom strategies for individuals with Asperger’s Syndrome (AS). Myles and Adreon will discuss how to address the unique needs of individuals with AS in a classroom setting. On the final day, Sherry A. Moyer will discuss the ECLIPSE Model, which is designed to address the social and behavioral needs of individuals with AS and high-functioning autism. The overall focus of the conference is geared towards individuals with AS and high-functioning autism, a community that is often overlooked in some of the larger autism conferences. Conference RegistrationRegistration fees range from $160.00 for a one-day pass for members to $600 for a full-conference pass for non-members.
